For ‘The Cumbria Garland’ I have created a graphic image commenting on life as an artist in Cumbria during COVID-19 for a publication on this topic by publishers inspiredbylakeland.co.uk for the project ‘Dreaming through the locking glass’.
The Cumbria Garland is a graphic work representing an uncomfortable perspective of the current pandemic from our rural bubble. How lucky we are for the landscape on our doorstep when millions live in gardenless flats. It is easy to bury our heads in the sand while the global landscape alters. Political, neoliberal, power games are frightening – fed through a cloud of false, fear-led propaganda – marketing strategies that have also become a norm. But it’s easier to accept the lies than listen to our ‘selves’ and collectively wake up. Thinking, questioning takes energy – have we have become too lazy, too apathetic, to do anything but remain sleeping? 1984 indeed. So here is a picture of yins and yans, stark realities, nature vs consumerist gluttony, power of wealthy men ‘playing God’, against the colourful backdrop of mother nature. But sunshine, and with it perhaps a little hope.
It follows quite succinctly from the project SOTWO – which looks at the overwhelm of the world and how we position – or escape – from it.
